Dr. Isabel Kaplan – Clinical psychologist and hypnosis for childbirth expert

Isabel kaplan, Psy.d.

I received my doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 1990 from Hahnemann University. As a doctoral student I combined my longstanding interest in women’s reproductive health with my interest in psychology, culminating in my dissertation on the psychological aspects of assisted reproductive technologies, which were then in their infancy.

After a few years of employment at Montefiore Medical Center (Bronx, NY) doing psychotherapy with AIDS patients, I began my private practice. In my general psychotherapy practice I have used Ericksonian hypnosis and guided imagery for a wide range of issues from symptom relief to deep exploration of early family experiences and healing from trauma. I’ve had extensive training in sex therapy and have used these modalities for treatment of sexual dysfunction as well.

My first experience with hypnosis for childbirth was when I had my own children. I’ve worked with both clients and friends in this capacity over the years. I’ve also helped women cope with their experiences of infertility, miscarriage, and concerns about genetic testing results.

I am a student of the mind-body connection and how it can be harnessed to facilitate a grounded and meaningful birth experience. A strong connection is usually an asset but there are times when altering the mind-body connection, as during labor, can be a helpful approach. The beauty of hypnosis is that there are limitless possibilities that can be used to co-create a highly personalized, targeted experience that uniquely meets your needs.
